Exploring Connotation in 'Scars to Your Beautiful' by Alessia Cara: A Semantic Perspective
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study analyzes the connotative meanings in the lyrics of Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara, exploring how the song communicates messages of self-acceptance, empowerment, and resistance against societal beauty standards through connotative language. Using a semantic analysis approach, the study identifies three primary themes: self-worth and empowerment, the rejection of societal beauty ideals, and the symbolism of scars as a representation of personal growth and resilience. The analysis reveals how the song’s lyrics encourage listeners to embrace their inherent beauty, reject narrow societal standards, and view scars as symbols of strength rather than imperfection. The findings highlight the role of song lyrics as a powerful tool for social commentary, promoting body positivity and challenging traditional beauty norms. This research contributes to the understanding of how connotation in song lyrics shapes listeners' emotional and social perceptions, and underscores the importance of self-acceptance in contemporary cultural discourse.
